Just fork out for a decent set that'll last you, I had a nasty run in with a pothole at 70mph in the dark during the winter and the tyre burst but my wheels weren't even slightly phased by it because they're good solid (pretty expensive) wheels.

It definitely stops the wheels spinning on a hard start, without a doubt.
If I turn it off the wheels spin up much easier although on a dry day it pulls off much easier with TC off
Fitted maggis onto mine this week and despite fudging a drop link it went quite well :) they're definitely more comfortable than my cup shocks and lowering springs and it's pretty low too:)
Yeah that's the only issue but a full re panelling would be interesting/mega pricey, depending on a price I'd probably be interested though because I could always get it painted
