If your new to detailing or just think that a bucket and sponge are fine, have a read of the stickied posts from DavidKG for 'Good Washing Technique'
https://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=17

Good washing technique using the two bucket method is realy worth it in limitting any damage to your paintwork, wether your a clean freak or not.

Then have a read of some of his other guides on 'Machine polishing by DA or Rotary Polisher) and the non stickied 'Detailing Clay-starters guide'

Agreed! The two bucket method (with grit guards) is really important and DaveKG's guide explains it very well.

This method is also very easy to follow. You just need two buckets (preferably clear) and two grit guards, as well as a decent wash mitt or sponge (not 50p halfords sponge etc).

In short, you just fill one bucket up with water (rinse bucket) and the other with your chosen wash solution (wash bucket), I'm pleased to say that many 133.net members are now converted to using Dodo Juice BTBM shampoo :) You then wash the car as normal with the water from the 'wash bucket' but you would rinse your sponge/mitt in the 'rinse bucket' after each panel. The idea is to ensure that you are not wiping the grit and dirt that you have just washed off the car, back on to it in another area. This results in a cleaner car and significantly lowers the risk of inflicting swirl marks :)

PREVENTION IS DEFINITELY BETTER THAN CURE!
