I have recently bought a standard Twingo RS which seems to have a slight transmission whine that gets noticeably louder with speed not engine RPM and regardless being in or out of gear. It gets higher in pitch the faster I go, and lowers in pitch as I slow down, like a winding down. It's not quite loud enough to notice with the radio on but, with the radio off and travelling at around 60-70mph it can easily be heard. I have had this looked at, where a technician came out for a drive, listened to the noise, and came to the conclusion that it doesn't sound broken, and told me it's possibly just a characteristic of the car and that he isn't worried. I should point out that this was a Ford technician and not a Renault specialist.

I'm just wondering if this is a common noise for Twingo's or whether it's something I need to keep an eye.

Thanks, JS

Hard to tell with out hearing it, but the only noise increase with my gearbox whine is when I uprated the dog bone mount and stiffened up the others, basically it resonates more this is normal though. Have you checked to see if yours are standerd. There not the most refined engines but they seem to be pretty bulletproof if taken care of. Have you checked wheel bearings exaust leaks etc

If it happens when not in gear too I’d check your wheel bearings. Had the most annoying whine from mine at 30/35 mph and also at higher (50/60) mph

Changed the bearing and solved the problem

Thanks for the replies. It has been looked after well by the previous owner, lots of receipts etc. It did go through a full health check before being sold apparently so I imagine the oil is at least at a good level. I’m probably going to have it serviced early so I’ll ge the gearbox oil changed then. I’ll have to have a look at the wheel bearings. I don’t think it’s the front bearings as it doesn’t change in sound when turning either direction by could well be one of the rears.

Thanks, JS

Uuu according to your description I´ve got the same problem. I´ve done the gearbox oil change but the noise is still coming up (especially on 4th and 5th gear and around 2,5k rpm, then its drown by engine roar).
But nothing bad happened so far...

Best way to test for a bearing gone in the gearbox is drive along until you hear the noise, take it out of gear when you hear it. If it disappears in neutral you know it’s the gearbox. If it’s still there it’s something else. Another thing it might be is the driveshaft bearing
