So some of you may have seen my previous project thread for my MX5. I didn't update it much and there really wasn't much to read.

Anyways, the car got written off at Lydden Hill when I spun out and had an E36 follow me in. Two days later I found and bought a replacement MX5, so the plan is to get this one to the stage the previous one was at. Only difference is I want this done before Japfest next Saturday. That gives me a week and a half!

Here's the old one...

So let's begin...

Having spent the last 48 hours scouring all classifieds websites and forums I luckily stumbled across an MX5 that was freshly listed on eBay. The auction had only just started and had a bid of £100. With 5 days still left I contacted the seller who ended up being 20 miles away. I asked a few questions about the state of the car and asked how much they would sell for cash. A few hours later I go to have a look at the car, realise that despite the paintwork being atrocious, the chassis is MINT. That's all I cared about... After all, my engine, gearbox and virtually everything that unbolts will be transfered from one car to the other. I parted with £250 and drove the new car home.

Somehow I had managed to find myself a very clean example of an MX5. It's very uncommon to find one without previous repair or current rust issues. This one appears to have nothing current and no previous patching. RESULT! My last one cost me twice this and was rotten... I got lucky! The ONLY bad thing about this car is the paint. At one stage in its life it had a very cheap full respray which meant it ended up looking like this. Luckily, paint is happening anyway :)

The last 12 hours I've been frantically ordering everything I can think of that I'll need. This includes new flanges, gaskets and pipes for the turbo manifold (which unfortunately cracked in half during impact), new paint, engine service parts, new seals and gaskets, etc etc. My Paypal has taken a massive hit and my eBay feedback is about to climb a mountain!

Japfest in T-Minus 10 days... Time to get started!

Phoned a local classic car specialist and booked in an MOT at full price for Friday. I could have paid less but would have had some monkeys looking at the car... Other than a few chips in the windscreen and a seized caliper I see no reason why this won't pass as it is. That's the plan anyway. Get the MOT out of the way and then crack on with everything else without worrying about that. At least this way if it does fail, I've got a week to fix it. Anyway, I've got two days to fix the brake and check for any other obvious issues.

Keep tuned because you're about to see this standard MX5 transform into the drift slag that was before... Only this time I have better plans. More boost, wider stance, more angle......

The MX5 forum has over 100 cars attending. Because of this, Japfest have said we need two stands. The club organisers decided the best way to do this would be to have a "drift stand" for which they have chosen me. They knew I had written off the car but have faith that I can have another built in time :)

If all goes to plan there will be updates for this every day for the next week and a half :)

Woooooo sounds great, will be watching to see if you can get it done!

£250?! o_O might have to save a little and invest haha!

Awesome - this is going to be drift prep, 24 style.

Good too see you found another, on the way too getting it how it should be and also updating your thread :D
I'd love too get a cheap mx not for drifting but just for some summer fun as well as my bike. Haven't got the knowledge too do it myself though :(

On the plus side, get it looking amazing and you might end up in a mag due too the fast turn around

You know you want too try it. Not many people can say they have and even if you don't you can say you gave it a good go.

Can't wait to see this :D

On a side note.. on the old MX5, I liked the non purple paint job with the yellow details

Monday

First job was to jack the cars up and strip the front ends.

Had a really busy day yesterday prepping both cars for engine removal but we got it done in the end!

Took a while but several swinging kicks and crow bars got the passenger door opened.

Most of the interior is also out of the old car thanks to Elly :)

And the new engine bay has been cleaned and lower half undersealed (hard to see, it was dark).

Tomorrow the top half will be keyed and painted (show car!) and the old engine will be partly stripped for cambelt, water pump, thermostat and multiple seals. Once that's done, well drop it back in whilst performing a mild wire tuck.

Time dependant ill also replace rear ns caliper as that's seized and replace both lower balljoints and track rod ends as the rubbers have split (this is now an mot fail not advisory). Whilst track rod ends are being done ill whack some "lock spacers" in there for more steering angle.

Best get started!!!

Tuesday

Engine bay was cleaned up and sprayed, engine refitted with the new cambelt etc and timing reverted back to standard. Had loads of trouble getting it to run so that's something to look forward to tomorrow...

Lots of sanding and prepping the car throughout the day too.

Wednesday

We then started to paint the inside of the car black with some brushes, mini rollers and hammerite smooth. Much better!

The dash is also out to remove an aftermarket alarm, spray and tidy up the loom.

The only rusty patch on the car was grinded back, knocked through and tidied with an angle grinder until solid metal was found. Didn't take long as there wasn't much of it luckily! Got some rust converter inside followed by a ton of underseal. Inspection of the inner sill revealed the damage was only cosmetic. Quick template or two... Or three and a few small fires later we have a rust free shell again.

(no photo of repair after... will get one)

Lower balljoints and the track rod ends were fitted without any issues. Lock spacers will have to wait until I get new inners really.

Most of the car is now painted too!

Had major issues getting the engine to idle but thanks to some reworking of the loom and my standalone ecu we now have the car happy to idle.

Also got bullied and peer pressure made me buy a set of new wheels... Excited about these but wont reveal until they arrive in a couple days (hopefully).

Tomorrows plans: load base map onto ecu and get it running better. Finish painting. Repair rear caliper. Underseal arches. Fit exhaust. Fit Wideband sensor. Fit interior. Fit braided lines.

Busy day... Again!

Very clever and very brave man! Good luck :)
Couldn't do this without the help of mates who have been round all weekend. So many cars along the road outside. Think I have a photo somewhere lol.

Driveway looks like this most days...

Thats how a driveway should look like + a gf who makes you sandwiches whilst you're working on the car :p

Sorry for the lack of updates... Was a mad rush to get things done for Japfest.

Currently uploading all the photos from my phone (although I didn't really take that many) so I'll update very shortly.

Finished at 1:30 AM on Friday, back up at 4:00 AM on Saturday for the convoys to Japfest. Only just got it there!!

But... Got to Japfest and back. That means: Stage one complete.
