Front grill

Anybody know why this is there? The filled in part on the grill?
Is there anything behind it it's protecting?
If not I'm planning on making a bracket for a square number plate
What do people think?

I've often wondered this but have no idea sorry!

Its filled in to be more aerodynamic as air doesn't need to get into that part of the grille as the rad is over to the left of the grille, i cut all the holes out, took hours.
