Hire car help

I've just got back from work and as I walked to my hire car I noticed a nail in the tyre, it's through the corner where the sidewall meets the tread but doesn't seem to go into the tyre it's self, problem Is do I ring the hire company and see what they say? Do I leave it, hope it doesn't pop and plead ignorance? Or do I put the spare on?
