Knocking from front end

Could someone help me with this please? Car has been into Renault dealer with a knocking problem from front drivers side. After having a new top mount fitted and both engine mounts replaced, Renault have now decided the problem is a weight/ballast located behind the front bumper which was moving around under breaking. Does anyone know what this is for? Renault say they don't know what it's for and to fix the problem they have removed it.
Any help would be appreciated guys, thanks.

Be intrested to hear what this actually was, cos I have a random knocking noise too, I've heard there's iron weights of some kind to try and stop the spread of rust to the rest of the car other than that not a clue

I've also heard a few times that it could be the ball joints

It would be the ball joints. Highly common issue which Renault should and most do know about
