Ok, my compact digital camera lasted just under two weeks at uni - until i fell on it in a drunken mess - so I'm in need of a new one.

Ive put an insurance claim through for it, but not sure how much ill get from them as its a few years old now and was only about £150 new..

So i looked around as you do and came across this:

https://www.comet.co.uk/p/Digital-Cameras/buy-SAMSUNG-ST93-BLACK-Digital-Camera/743313

Considering the spec i was surprised to see its only £90! Seems like a goodun' to me?

Apparently its a Comet "exclusive" but i have seen it elsewhere, just for a bit more (£120ish) so even then not bad.

(ps, i wouldn't normally shop at comet, but usually the insurance companies give out vouchers and stuff so I'm thinking ahead)

Olympus tough. Built for student life :)
On paper, the spec and price of the samsung is going to be hard to beat although 16Mp is a lot to cram onto a small sensor. The Olly has the same size sensor, but only 14Mp, so each pixel is going to be a little bit bigger, so each pixel should need amplifying a bit less, leading to less noise in the picture. Besides, unless you have the camera set to highest quality, the maximum file size is irrelivant.

Waterproof to 10feet and drop proof to 5 feet, theres a chance of breaking it if you try, however in normal use, it should last you through uni

A friend of a friend had a Olly Mu Tough which was a previous model and the pictures were prety good, right from the beach and surfing, to the top of mountains and everything in between.

Just had a look on Flickr and found this which proves it is waterproof>>

If you get Comet vouchers, they also sell the Olympus but £20 more than WHE

That Olympus looks good ;-)

Karl recommend one for me then ;-) Im open to anything as i haven't bought a digi cam in a while. It needs to be a compact one not a DSLR like my Sony NEX-5 or your Nikon whatever it is lol!

Point and shoot, I love sony. The quality of the pics mine can take considering, is fantastic. And well built, and sooo easy to use (sony menu's are always the easiest to follow methinks). Not sure you could get a dsc-h20 in budget, if at all anymore

Yes point and shoot is what i meant ;-)

And I'm not too keen on Sony's menus. The one on my NEX-5 isn't the easiest to use and takes a lot of fiddly messing when i could be taking photos.

And although the dsc-h20 looks like a fairly decent camera, priced at around £200 and its only giving 10 megapixels? Seems a bit silly to be doing something like that when theres much higher quality images coming out of cheaper cameras? And theres not a budget as of yet, depends what the insurance pays out on the last one, if theres one i like enough, then ill put the extra to it. Although I'm not sure i want to be spending much more for a camera i could break again :S

Few of the Nikon ones look good cheers Karl. I'll have a proper look around the web for them a bit later on.

I agree with James on the camera megapixel count. The number of megapixels mainly effects the maximum print size at good quality. Once you get past 8MP, which is equivalent to a roughly 16"x20" (3264 x 2468) print are you really in need of many more?

Lens and sensor quality along with the camera processor etc make an equal contribution to picture quality really. Things like colour balance come from the sensor, and having a good processor to give you anti-shake features are often quite a help.

I'd say have a play with some of the cameras in a shop and see what you like, and what gives you a picture you're happy with. If you speak nicely to the sales-people you may get to see the photos on a reasonable screen to view the final quality.

Edit:

Sorry, forgot to add before. I was playing with a few of these the other day, and was quite pleasantly surprised with the quality you get for the price of some of the modern point and shoot's

Apologies for the currys links, I was bored in town the other day...

My D50... only 6 mega pixels. And does me perfectly fine. It's fantastic in low light situations and is incredibly light for an slr. I think 8mp is about the most you'll need unless you're gonna be doing huge prints for an exhibition... which you're not.

THe more there are, the slower it's gonna get!

When it comes to megapixel it is quite an important feature as I might have to make large prints up to A1. It would be rare that I have to do them that large as thats what my DSLR is for but I may just need to take a photo of something when I've not got my other camera with me.

In which case, use Genuine Fractals and enlarge a smaller image. Printing to A1 will certainly show any flaws in a camera.

Dr Drew and Maggi beat me to it, berating the huge Mp count from a small sensor. Most current SLR cameras have about 12-17Mp from a sensor which is over 12 times bigger than the sensor on most compacts.

As I see it, the major benefit of a larger Mp count is the ability to crop down a picture. However this is throwing away data, so you might as well have bought a lesser Mp count camera and composed the shot better
