Hi All,

My girlfriend has just purchase a beautiful blue Renault twingo 133 sport 58 plate with only 11500miles from new. The garage she originally bought it from said it didn’t need a cambelt because of the mileage although i argued about the age of the vehicle but he still insisted it was fine. Since then i have found out that its 72,000 miles or 6 year, which the car is now on 6 years! I have been told by two different renault specialist and one says that the dephaser should be changed and the other said there isnt no point as these only need changing on high mileage vehicles with lack of oil changes. Can anybody shed light on this for me please?

Can any body advise a good place at a reasonable price in the south west of wales or south west area. I dont mind travelling at the right price etc to midland area.

I have contacted K-tec racing and got a price. Still waiting a price from Fred at BTM which i have heard great things about.

Thank you

Daniel

BTM / SJM (down in somerset or devon) will be your best options here. being strict, yes the theory is correct regarding the dephaser. it's clearances wear out with wear and this can be reduced with more frequent than usual oil changes (every 3-6k miles no matter what) judging on mileage and not age. but realistically it's a better economy to change the dephaser with every belt because should your daphaser go in 3 months time or 3 years time, or never at all ... that's going to mean a whole new bill for a timing belt labour and resetting the timing as the dephaser is a belt off job!

fred @ BTM & Dan @SJM will no doubt tell you this
(i'm a renault tech) and this goes for any renault with PhaseVVT be it a renault scenic or a renaultsport megane!

looking at around 5 hours labour plus 300 in parts at wholesale using genuine renault (Dephaser, timing belt kit, aux belt kit, waterpump etc) so it really depends on different places labour rates.

we charge 430+ vat for this K4M engine. around 500 seems about right, most local garages have the tools for this engine as the K4M is a veryyyy veryyy veryyyyy common engine on our roads!!

not going to be able to help you out in that front my friend, i'm from Glasgow unfortunately otherwise i'd be happy to do the job for you lol

Bare in mind, the price quoted includes an oil and filter change aswell, I did advise that the dephaser is advised to be changed but this is ultimately at customers dis reason unless of course the dephaser is exceeding it's tolerance.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for a reply,

This is my girlfriends car so searching around on her behalf. I have heard great things about you and your company off Andy already and i know that he always comes to you for service and other items i.e. remap etc.

Can you PM your number or can i get it off Andy Chapman? I more than likely be coming to yourself to have it done. In the next month or two but probably only going to have the cambelt + aux belt done and not the dephaser unless its in extremely bad condition when you look at it? Is this possible? I already have the price off Andy for this to be done.

Kind Regards
Daniel

No problem atall. PM Enroute.

It's possible to check for play within the dephaser, but this is only when the belts are off, so it would be a case of "well the dephaser has play so needs changing, and needs doing now as the belts are off" if you come prepared for the worst case scenario, then you could end up happy :)

Dan.
