Might be a daft question but is there any chance Clio 172 springs would fit a 133?

most probably yes, but i won't give you a 100% on that. no point in putting 172 springs on a twingo though, especially when there are springs freely available for the 133 already :)

Might be able to get some 50mm springs for £40 that's all thought it might be worth a try

Physically fit, probably but rear spring seats are slightly different.

Have lengths and rates that complement the 133 :? Pass

take into consideration both cars OEM right heights from factory. assuming a 50mm drop on a 172 will equate to a 50mm drop on a 133 is a false economy. it may only be a 10mm drop .... insert X mm guesses here :) you will need to buy two new rear spring perch rubbers for the spring to sit on so that it would fit in the 172 springs but they would sit just fine yes. worth it? NO! lol you'll only end up close to the £100 + pounds all in after you buy the parts you need to make them fit so it wouldn't be worth your while. also tailor in the fact as neil mentions the spring rates will be incompatible with your shock absorbers, so premature wear will show it's ugly face quicker than you may think!

Might just stick to saving up for coilovers then, all the coilovers seem to be silly money though done need massive spec ones just ones that take the car fairly low

they are quite expensive, but depending on how long you keep the car and if they are serviceable..the coilovers maintain good value on resale so long as they've been refurbished :) so you may pay 700 or so for some coilovers, but you could sell them for 350 or there abouts so think about the positives :D
