Food for thought with the clio broken... what to do. Ktec are not doing engine rebuilds at tbe moment due to moving... good mate hasnt got the kit to balance crank etc so cant do it.... approx 1500 to put another standard unit in.....

Oh the brain ache......

Automotive Machine Services. Near Burgess Hill were recomended by Matt from Catcams for my head work.

How did you manage to throw a rod... or think you have :?

General driving today with the wife in the car. A loud rattle started thought thats not good. Got louder and louder with or without clutch. Pulled away at traffic lights alot less power than Normal.... could be a shell thats spun im told.... but not sure. No oil spilt. No smoke. No bang!

Ill give those guy's a call. Thanks singlespeed.

Dont mind being without car for a while as can use motor bike. At 91k its done ok. No signs of this happening before... starts fine drove fine maybe a bit tappety but at 91k on a 1.2 thats expected....

Clio has a ko3 from diesel passat.

Ah right, so we know the standard clutch wasn't up to the job but now the internals aren't that good as its gone already?

TCe engines need a lot of work for big power gains in the end then

The cluch is a weak point.

Engine has done 91k plus its an ex demo car. ..... engines done ok if you ask me..... its a 63% increase in power remember. .....

Ill have it stripped by local garage and see whats what :)

this does sound like pre-detonation though westy, which could be caused by a whole ton of things such as a done in piston ring to a done in spark plug which may or may not be firing correctly, take them out and have a look at them and let us know the condition of them will you? if they are ok, check your oil dipstick. if you notice excessive amounts of petrol smells in your oil that would mean that the piston ring is gone, which could also be a symptom of far more serious issues such as the ones you are worried about. if you have a stethoscope which you can get from any motor factors, you can listen in on the engine and trace the source in terms of a general location before you spend 500 on a strip down to find out that it was a dodgy spark!

Aha thanks ill look at the sparks. The sparks are changed every year and at every service. So is oil filter gearbox oil. Fluids. Etc its well looked after....

The knocking was loud so a bit worried about starting it up again too..... it was a slappy whacking tap noise..... started and got progressivly louder as I got slower I was driving steady at about 50-60 when it started in 5th gear so no real strain on engine :-(

im sure it wont be your sparks but the best thing to do is check over all the possibilities so that they are ruled out, start easy. your best bet is the stethoscope. it means you can listen in to the top of the engine where the camshafts are and if the noise is from the top end you can begin to look at possible vale lash and a good few other things wheras if it's the bottom end it could be that your bearings are short or your end float has gotten excessive but at least with a ten quid stethoscope you put yourself at ease and begin to identify exactly if it's top end or bottom end! that would be listening checks for mechanical symptoms, for ignition issues do you know how to check your plugs with the ignition on and car running? pair of wooden tongs, get the spark plug plugged in and ready to spark and get someone to start the engine and put the spark a milimeter or two away from a safe earthing point on the cylinder head and repeat for all four plugs to at least rule ignition issues out! if you notice that one spark is weaker than the other, you can rule out expensive mechanical issues! this really costs you nothing and the worst case scenario is you've gave it your best shot and off to a garage she goes, best case scenario is with a ten quid stethoscope and 2 quid wooden tongs you can fairly isolate the problem which will save on large diagnostic strip down fees

sorry for the large essay man hope that didn't leave you bewildered
