Apparently Renault suggest that it is best practice to change the cam-belt after 72,000 miles or 5 years. which ever comes first. My car in at the Renault garage now and i enquired about it and apparently from them its £399.

Is this a good quote? or can I get it done substantially cheaper elsewhere and get the same peace of mind? Seeing as the car is with them anyway should i just bite the bullet and get it done?

Was thinking of giving K-Tec a ring and seeing what they will charge on top of how much it will cost to get the car there. And maybe get an upgrade or two, but that will make it a lean month.

Is that for all work completed? I'd say that's a good price as I'm sure when I sold me GT the next service included belts and renault near me quoted £600ish pounds or so.

£399 added on for a cam belt change. I would have had to pay extra for the dealer to cover cambelt and things.

EDIT: I mean that as an add-on when I bought the car

If its due and they're selling it, I would expect it to be covered within the sale price anyway. Especially if its sold with service history, as that would suggest its being carried out to Renaults recommendations

Yeah but it wasnt due when i bought it, But i could have paid for 2 years "free" manufacturer servicing when i got the car but it would have tipped the budget

I paid £350 for my belts changed. That was from an RS specialist in Bedford. (On a GT though)

£ 50 quidd for my timing belt kit and with a lil help from the mechanic an hour later it was done :)

i was £380 for both belts, waterpump, coolant using all genuine renault parts from my local performance car specialist on my GT

an RS will be more and should be dealer or RS specialist only due to the tools needed, or the cam timing will be out

so the RS twingo "must" go to a specialist or dealer? same problems (special tools) as the 172/182's i guess?! thankfully our service intervals aren't as often as the 172/182's so that's a relief!

my next service will be the belts, better start saving!

It's not that much saying it's only once every five years. I'll be using it as an excuse to get the cams done although I refuse to drive to ktec so I'll have to see if I can source the cams elsewhere

I had a quote for £195 from my local regular garage, that was for everything except the water pump.

On a 133 (K4M engine)it would be a false economy to do all the work without changing the water pump. If the pump seized, which they can, it will take out the rest.

Its worth doing the water pump on a GT (D4Ft) was the seals can fail. If you don't do it, your basically expecting it to last until the next change or probably the life of the car

Regardless of what car it is I think it's good practice to change the water pump at the same time as the timing belt, particularly if it's timing belt driven. As well as changing the aux belt and tensioner. Just my opinion.

hi, the last belt we done took around three hours with the pump and belts we just locked the cams with cam locking plates that we made up in house and set it from there, really simple job that any garage can do. Timing is set by the ecu after youve set cam and krank to timing marks so no ocd skills needed just more room needed in that engine bay lol

I would always get the water pump done, does anyone know how much it would add to the bill?
In the region of £60 for the water pump and about £150 for an inlet cam dephaser kit. Fitting shouldn't be much more

Definately do the waterpump on the 1.2 tce its the same setup as the 1.2 16v and we had 2 pumps sieze and take out the cambelt on 1.2 clios a few years ago less than a year after cambelt change!

So, its definately a false economy to only do half a job. Unless everything on the system is going to last untill the next scheduled inspection/replacement, your just wasting money doing only the belts and hoping that you don't end up needing a new engine

you're spot on neil, the biggest problem i seen was with the spindle and gaskets. basically when the tension was brought off the spindles and sealed bearings you'd get a huge clicking sound with massive free play on the fan hub, if allowed to continue without replacement it's anyones guess to when it was going to fail
