Hey.

I'm currently in the process of selling my car, a Honda Civic Type R FN2 and I already have my eye on getting a Twingo 133 as a replacement.

I should have funds and be in a position to buy in around two to three weeks time and my budget (not including extra costs i.e. cambelt) is £4000 - £4100.

My first question is, how much should I budget for a cambelt change, including usual water pump, dephaser etc?

Second question, can anyone recommend a garage, specialist or someone in Glasgow, or close by, that could do the cambelt change for me?

Are there any Twingo 133 members in my neck of the woods?

Cheers :)

Hi mate, had my cambelt changed a few month ago. After ringing round various specialists near me which they weren't many non could supply a courtesy car. So I took it to the dealer in pontefract West Yorkshire. Total cost ££750 that included timing/cambelt kit, aux belt plus tensioner, dephaser pulley and coolant. It is a big outlay but it's more for pierce of mind really comes with 1 year guarantee and that will last me another 70,000 miles or 5 years so definitely haggle the price when you come to buy if the belt needs doing. Oh by the way dephaser isn't essential but if it were to break they'd have to redo the belts anyway so makes sense to do it people and do the lot.

Hey mate,

Thanks for the reply!

£750, more than I was expecting but at least it gives me an idea. Would you say that £750 is about average?

I've had a quote of £1K from someone I've used before, but I immediately thought that was very high!

Can any members recommend someone in the Glasgow area? :)

TIA

I've heard other members get quotes towards a thousand from main dealers. Apparently the price I paid had 20% off parts so it won't be far off the 1k mark. Most independents wanted at least £600 for all of the above, parts not guaranteed to be geniuie either so I thought for the sake of another 150 or so thought I'd just take it to dealers. Think there are a few members on here from your neck of woods sure they'll advise best place to go. Yes you'll get it cheaper no dought especially if you buy the parts yourself off eBay I just went for easy option lol.

I got a quote from a Renault specialist near Edinburgh of £540 including dephaser, pump, all belts and pulleys and they seem to get a good write up online so that works for me.

Just need to find a Twingo 133 that fits my bill and budget now :)

That's a very good price did you say it's a 133 not a standard twingo or GT though. Renault seem to do fixed prices for all there services now according to there website unless they charge what they like depending what part of the country your in. Best of luck finding a twingo bud keep us updated how things go.

Thanks mate.

Yep, I said it was a Twingo 133, the specialist is called Rentec.

I've got my eye on these few Twingos....

Though the MOT history and condition (from photos) don't look so great on the second one.

The second one for the mileage looks like it's had a harder life...

Is there a particular spec your wanting? As they do a few different options (cup chassis etc) which are worth considering, and are you wanting it standard or modified?

MOT history can also be checked online, so may be worth doing that to see what it's failed on and required in the past, what advisory's it has had/has etc.

Also, don't limit yourself to AutoTrader, most cars on there these days are dealer sales (unless that is what you want), for private I would consider Gumtree and eBay personally, a lot more choice on those sites.

Hi mate.

Standard or Cup chassis, dependent on price really.

I've looked at MOT history for both and I agree, the second one seems to have a harder life. If the first one has definitely had the cambelt/water pump etc changed then it seems a much better deal.

I'm looking at Autotrader, Gumtree, Pistonheads and eBay, but unfortunately there isn't many Twingo 133 for sale near me at the moment.

Be a tough one to call really yes the higher mileage one has more miles but could of been used on the motorways abit, mines a 10 plate with 71k on clock I've had it since 40k two years I've had mine, mixture of motorway & B roads really. The second one shouldn't be dismissed based on the low mileage leading to think it's just done short town trips. If they've both been serviced regular shouldn't be any problems, but the belt would need changeing nether the less due to time dependant 5years.

I've always bought on condition rather than mileage. In fact the cars I have had with very low mileage in the past have actually been the most troublesome!

Maybe get the seller of any ones you do like to send you detailed pictures and information, and then book a flight down? I've bought a car from Glasgow this way before, and I live down in Cornwall lol. Gives you a good drive back to get to know the new car ;)

Nice lucking motor eagerly spotted the optional RS gear knob too, looks like a full fat with cup chassis. Seem to be quite a few twingo RS's around for sale atm.
